Sony iPod? Yawn.
Sony is gearing up to take on the iPod (again) with this funky peanut-shaped thingamijig.
One of the senior head honchos over at Sony announced thier plans on Friday to introduce another digital audio player, complete with a download service and special software… which kind of sounds familiar.
Besides being a “me too” kind of product, it’s almost a given that these guys are going to screw this up. I mean what more can we expect from the guys who went so far as to put a root kit on the computers of everyone who was kind enough to buy their CDs? (If you haven’t heard already about the Sony crippleware fiasco, you need to read the ongoing commentary over at boingboing).
While it might be a nice way to challenge the growing monopoly that Apple enjoys in the market for screwing their consumers, it’s not likely to be something that really steps up to the plate by actually giving us what we want - a tough, light and large-capacity mobile audie device that allows us to use the music that we legally buy in a way that we see fit by not crippling us with rediculous DRM policies.
In the meantime, we’ll be sticking to iRivers.
