iPods and iTunes - The Downside

Digital Rights Management is something we don’t talk a lot about on Marco Gizmo - we tend to stick with the gadgets cos it’s what we like.

But DRM is something that does have an effect on we travelling technology lovers, perhaps most strikinigly with our love of the iPod and iTunes.

Let’s face it, the iPod has been a great little piece of light kit for us that has allowed us to have a decent storage device for our music, photos and video of our travels.

But there is a sinister side to it from the point of view of consumers.

Now, while the iPod is a great thing if you keep it in good condition, you still need to have decent covers and protectors to keep it that way. iPods are made to be replaced fairly regularly. You can scratch the things by looking at them sideways.

And that’s where it gets tricky if you are a lover of iTunes.

Did you know that you cannot play your iTunes collection on anything other than Quicktime or your iPod as part of Apple’s own DRM policies?

You cannot play iTunes on a normal MP3 player.

That means that if you have been busy downloading songs from iTunes and then your iPod breaks, you will have to buy another iPod and forget about transferring your iTunes to a different type of player.

That is certainly uncool from our point of view.

It’s also a reason not to use iTunes.

UMPC - The End of Travel Technology?

If you are really into mobile technology, then there is no doubt that you have already heard of the Microsoft Origami project which has developed a piece of kit know as the Ultra Mobile PC.

Marco Gizmo wrote about it in the lead up to the great unvealing a while back.

To say we are itching to road test one of these babies is an understatement - we have very big hopes for this contraption.

In fact, we’re already getting ready to throw out half of our other gear.

With the UMPC boasting an XP operating system with a built in GPS, giant harddrive (great for MP3s and digital photo storage), bluetooth and wi-fi so you always have internet and gaming capabilities, you can get ready to throw out your GPS, MP3 player or Ipod, PDA and maybe even your laptop and mobile gaming device.

With all that extra gear cleared out of your pack and the UMPC coming in at only 2 pounds, happy times are gonna be here for those of us who like to travel light.

But there are a few problems.

One that is really concerning us is that the manufacturers so far have been a little cagey about revealing the capabilities of the processor that will be driving the thing. Small and light is great, but something that actually works well and fast is better. Let’s hope they can actually fire the thing with a decent processor.

While you probably shouldn’t be throwing out your Blackberry or GPS just yet, things are looking pretty good. If this device lives up to the hype (and let’s hope it does) then we are moving towards a single integrated solution for all travel tech needs.

Now wouldn’t that be nice?

The Pope has an iPod!

As one of the most prolific travelers in the world, it was only a matter of time before Pope Benedict XVI joined his traveling brethren in the digital revolution.

Newspapers around the world are proclaiming the Pope’s ascention to the heights of iPod owners since some of the Vatican radio service employees gave him one - a 2 Gig Nano.

The Pope even reposnded by saying “Computer Technology is the future.”

I wonder if he is going to start reading Marco Gizmo?

Microsoft Origami

It looks like mobile computing is going to go to a new level soon with Microsoft expected to announce the fruits of their “origami project.”

So what is “origami?”

Well nobody knows for sure, but this video gives a pretty decent idea - even though the images are supposedly over a year old.

From that is looks like a mobile computer bigger than a palm, but smaller than a tablet.

It seems to have quite a few bells and whistles too that might be of great interest to us travelers.

Of course, I am sure it will have a decnet size hard drive to store digital photos and your MP3. From the video it looks like you’ll be able to hook the origami up to yoru mobile phone to send the pics too. Of course you can make notes for the pics on the origami too.

It also looks like it will be set up to give you remote access to your desktop PC.

The games for the origami that they show in the clip also look pretty decent.

It’s Wifi enabled so you can send email and browse the web if you can find an internet connection.

It also looks like it will incorporate a GPS device for city or countryside navigation.

Whatever it is, it is expected to be announced on Thursday.

This certainly looks like something we’ll be following.

palmOne Tungsten E2 Handheld

The palmOne Tungsten E2 Handheld is a basic little palm from palmOne that’s claim tio fame is its screen which is a lot richer in colour than its competitors.

You can do all of the usual palm type stuff with calendars, contact, documents etc, but for us travelers the photos and videos options are the clinchers. You can do your MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint on them too - a nice, light option for a business trip.

It is SD, and SDIO expansion card compatible and has an Intel 200MHz XScale ARM-based processor.

An Expansion card is required for MP3s which doesn’t come with the unti, thought at under $200 it’s at the right price - and let’s face it - every traveler loves whipping out the palmtop.

Check it out at Franklin Covey.
